Devotional on Ephesians 2:10

July 15th, 2003  |  by Helen  |  published in Christian, Writing before 2004

In 2003 my church put together a page-a-day devotional booklet for the month of September. Each entry was written by a member/regular attender of the church. Here’s the one I wrote.
Our workmanship takes many forms, from awe-inspiring buildings to individually made Pinewood Derby cars, carefully constructed for the day of the big race.
In today’s [...]

My Personal Experience With Manic-Depression (Bipolar Disorder) - 12/05/02 Update

December 5th, 2002  |  by Helen  |  published in Mental Health, Writing before 2004

This is an update to what I wrote in late 1997 about my personal experience with manic-depression.
Continuing where I left off…I was off medication and things were going fine until around late August or September, 2000. My husband started becoming concerned about me - he thought I was getting a little ‘active’ (for example [...]

Caught Between Two Views of Jesus: A Modern Meditation

March 8th, 2002  |  by Helen  |  published in Christian, Writing before 2004

This was published in the Wednesday Journal 3/6/02.
This month I’ve been taking a course offered at Unity Temple called “Jesus for Unitarian Universalists and other Modern Persons”. I’m not a Unitarian so I guess I must be a Modern Person, whatever that is. It sounds flattering, anyway.
I actually belong to a very conservative Church in [...]

The Doctrine of Hell

November 23rd, 2001  |  by Helen  |  published in My change in faith, Writing before 2004

“As the heavens are higher than the earth,
so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.”
Purpose: I wrote this to raise the questions: Who did Jesus believe was going to hell and does that match who Christians today say will go to hell?
I think it would be fair [...]

Christian Virtues in the Harry Potter Movie

November 19th, 2001  |  by Helen  |  published in Christian, Writing before 2004

Since Christians are focusing a lot on what they don’t like in the Harry Potter movie, I’m going to say what I think affirms Biblical values…I’ll try not to discuss the plot though
The big-picture theme of a ‘predestined’ child is very…Christian, I’d say.
Harry has a growing awareness that he is ‘famous’, ‘different’ (not [...]

Picturing Mental Illness

June 1st, 2001  |  by Helen  |  published in Mental Health, Writing before 2004

I think I was somewhat ill when I wrote this.
(This, of course, is allegorical)

The Party
You were so excited to be invited! At last…maybe this would lead to more friends…maybe this would open the door finally for you to be part of the “in-crowd” instead of the also-rans…there would be a lot of people here you [...]
