Ben and Esther both carved pumpkins on Sunday to put outside this evening with candles in.

Ben didn’t go trick-or-treating this year; he went to a friend’s house after school to watch a scary movie then came home.

Esther went trick-or treating with her friend Yulia. Esther was dressed up as Endora, Samantha’s mother from the Bewitched TV series.

Here’s a photo of Endora for comparison: Continue reading »

canon powershot G9IMG_0063 A few weeks ago I found my camera had developed a purple hue all across the top of the viewing screen (like a windshield which is shaded at the top to reduce glare). The photos had this on also. That meant I got to go buy a new camera. Digital cameras have come a long way in the last three and a bit years since I bought the last one. I like Canon cameras and I was looking for something fairly flexible, but still somewhat compact. I got a Canon Powershot G9 since it seemed to fit those criteria well and my son said he wouldn’t be embarrassed if I got that one. (Earlier in the year he did lots of camera research so he has opinions about which ones to buy)

I’m still figuring out all the options on it. One of the really neat things about it is, it has high ASA choices and image stabilization. So I can take indoor photos without flash like this one I took on Tuesday evening when I went to hear Brian McLaren lecture locally.

Esther was placed Principal Second which means she’ll be leading the 2nd violin section in the district festival this year.

Apparently she came third out of the 52 violinists who got in and the top three scored very close together. The people who scored higher than her are both eighth graders. So that’s all great news for her and means she did very well in her audition.

She has a solo in one of the pieces which is neat.

This year Ben is eligible for high school IMEA (this is a district orchestra festival). His audition was on Monday and he auditioned for the first violin section. Apparently he got in, which is great news. Participants in the high school one don’t find out where they’ll sit until the day of the concert – which is November 17 this year.

Esther’s audition for junior high IMEA is this morning. There’s a bus going from her school but she’d rather I take her so I’m going to drive her down there. All the auditions and concerts are way south again this year – her audition location is 45 mins away according to the GPS. It was nice that the auditions and concerts were closer to us the last couple of years – oh well. She should hear whether she gets in and where she’s sitting Monday or Tuesday.
