Jason Clark and Paul Mayers kindly invited me to be a guest blogger on Jason’s blog today.

I posted the value of relationship on there (which I first posted on here a couple of weeks ago). I figured I’d go with something I knew a few people liked rather than something brand new. Scot McKnight linked to the value of relationship a week or so ago in his weekly meanderings so I figured it must be ok!

Everyone seems to like a good story. I certainly do – I learned to read early and have been an avid reader ever since.

I think one reason stories work so well is that they don’t demand that we understand them a particular way. They come alongside us, gently inviting us to find meaning in them and parallels with our own lives.

This leaves us wonderful room to find our own connections with the story. Since our brains love to find connections, we do and are often shocked at how powerfully a story touches us.

Ben competed in the Latin School math contest today. He competed in the individual and team events. His team came fourth (which earned them medals and a trophy for his school). Individually he placed third – he got a trophy for that.

Last year he was in this contest but his team didn’t place, nor did anyone on it place individually.

He has another math contest next Saturday: mathcounts. He’s been practising for this since last Summer. He’s hoping he might do well enough individually to go onto the state finals. Last year he got there because his school team came first.

I’ve mentioned before that he’s taking a high school math course this year (he’s actually in 8th grade – middle school – but he goes to the high school for an hour each day to take this 9th grade course). They took semester final exams a couple of weeks ago. Ben got the highest score in the class.
